Feeling Like Royal-tea: Three London Tea Experiences Not to Miss
Explore and enjoy this iconic city through a teacup.
When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford. -Samuel Johnson
My first trip to London was part of a larger European vacation. London was not the central focus, but more of a starting and ending point to get back to the States.
But, as I began planning the trip, I had a sneaking suspicion that London would wind up being my favorite stop.
…And I was right.
There’s just too much to say and love about London.. the history, museums, etc. So I’ll just focus this post on my preferred London experience: afternoon tea.
The Dorchester’s Afternoon Tea at The Promenade
There are so many iconic London hotels offering afternoon tea. I chose The Dorchester for its perfect blend of opulent surroundings, tasty menu and reasonable (for London) cost.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience. The gorgeous surroundings, the perfectly brewed tea, the delicate finger sandwiches, and, of course, the scones with clotted cream and jam — exceeded our expectations. It was an afternoon of pure indulgence.
If it’s your first time in London, the most delightful way to get your bearings is Bridgit's Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour. This adorable double-decker bus takes you on a sightseeing journey while you enjoy a traditional British afternoon tea.
Was it a little “touristy?” Sure.
Did it give us a great overview of central London’s layout and history?
Yes, it did!
This was a fun, relaxed way to explore the city while enjoying a generous spread of sweet and savory offerings. We were there the week after King Charles III’s coronation, so our ride was royalty themed. Although it isn’t available anymore, Brigit’s always has a rotating selection of fun themed rides.
It’s no secret that London is a shopper’s paradise. The British have perfected the department store, the “food hall” and market. My absolute favorite shop in London is Fortnum & Mason, a true British institution and favorite of Queen Elizabeth II.
F&M is a must for foodies and lovers of all things British. Established in 1707, it’s famous for its gourmet hampers and exquisite range of teas, and is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike.
If you’re visiting their Piccadilly flagship, make sure to carve out enough time to wander through the five floors of homewares, gifts and accessories — and of course gourmet food and treats. If you’re a marzipan fan like me, stock up!
Plan ahead and make a reservation for tea in their Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on the fifth floor. Situated within an elegant, oak-paneled room, this salon provides a beautiful setting for the ultimate afternoon tea experience.
